Toennies rebrands as Premium Food Group

The Tönnies Group will operate at the holding level under the name Premium Food Group (PFG) starting in 2025. This change underscores the evolution of the family-owned company, based in Rheda-Wiedenbrück in germany, from a meat-focused business to a diversified food-producer. The Tönnies-brand, globally recognized for high quality meat from Germany, will retain its core identity and be exclusively associated with the independent meat-production-business-unit.

In addition to meat- and sausage-products, the group already produces and markets vegetarian products, convenience foods, pet food, sauces, soups, by-products like proteins, fats and flours and much more. They also supply raw materials for the pharmaceutical industry and biofuels, operate their own cold-storage-facilities and have a fresh and ultra-fresh logistics company. The Tönnies Group has also invested in various fields along the value chain. „Our strategic development towards innovative products and services along the value chain shows, that we are focused not only on the present but also on the future of the food industry and want to actively contribute to healthy nutrition. We align our food-production with consumer-needs while prioritizing innovative and sustainable production-processes“, explain shareholders Clemens, Maximilian and Robert Tönnies their business strategy.

The further development into the Premium Food Group emphasizes the group’s diversity, aligns with its broad and international reach. It is the logical outcome of recent years’ develpoment. „The structural transformation process, which now culminates in the holding’s new name, was initiated years ago. This positions our company for the future. We aim for the business units to make decisions faster and act more independently. Each unit is already a company of its own“, says Maximilian Tönnies. Administrative tasks will be centralized under the holding. „We prefer having many speedboats to a single large tanker.”

The roots of the Premium Food Group lie in meat production. Yet the group has steadily developed into an innovative 360-degree food provider, that harmonizes modern, balanced nutrition with sustainability. The group offers a wide range of high-quality products. „We care deeply about balanced nutrition for consumers, which naturally includes the responsible enjoyment of high-quality meat as an important nutrient source. With our extensive product range, encompassing both animal and plant-based options, we emphasize our commitment to supporting balanced nutrition”, the shareholders add.

The Tönnies brand will increasingly focus on beef and pork. „ Tönnies, with its strong reputation, stands for high-quality pork and beef – in germany, europe, and worldwide”, says Clemens Tönnies. Consequently, the pork- and beef-divisions will continue to operate under the Tönnies-family-name. Although the Tönnies-logo at the cold storage facility at the company’s headquarter in Rheda-Wiedenbrück will be replaced by the new PFG-logo, „our DNA is that of a family-business, and that will remain”, the shareholders say.

Background: Tönnies was founded in 1971 by Bernd and Clemens Tönnies. Building on their parents’ small butcher shop, they developed the business into one of europe’s leading meat companies. In recent years, the group has expanded its presence across the value chain. The recent investment in the fermentation start-up Nosh underscores the transformation into a diversified food producer.
